Schittny’s elegant wall object series “Tubes” combines ideas of Avant-Garde geometric abstract art, post-war modernism and Op-Art. The special appeal of these pieces lies in their absence of representational content. The “Tubes” have a rational-geometric structure but are equally sensual and overwhelming in their brilliance which changes and shimmers depending on the angle of view and the incidence of light. These new works by Burkhard Schittny perfectly balance between minimalist reduction and blinding illusionism.

Germany
Award-winning Hamburg-based artist Burkhard Schittny first studied fashion design at the Art Academy in Bremen, then photography. His diploma - a photographic examination of Francis Bacon's work - was followed by an MA in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins College of Fine Art in London. His conceptual works "LEGACY PROJECTS" revolve around the theme of "power" and make use of the artistic genres of photography, video, performance, sound and typography. Other photo series, such as "UNTITLED", reveal Schittny's special interest in a hybrid visual world: here Schittny crosses photography, film and painting and creates visual flashbacks between image and fantasy. With the "TUBES", Schittny now enters completely new terrain: the noble wall objects made of rolled filter foils combine ideas of geometric abstraction art of avant-garde art, post-war modernism and Op-Art. The special charm of these objects lies in their renunciation of representational content. The "TUBES" have a rational-geometric structure, but are also sensual to the same degree and overwhelming in their luminous brilliance. Burkhard Schittny's new works perfectly balance minimalist condensation and dazzling illusionism.
