We all carry with us an unspoken and often unknown history. Without trying to understand it I seek to transform it. I use family photos and letters in combination with different papers and collage materials I've saved. They all get cut, then sewed, and print on. The loop you see in this piece represents humans in an energetic way. A loop is also used in machine sewing which is what I use to compile my collages. Family and their dynamics guide my work; our ancestry, which seems precious, is continually altered by the introduction of new people into a family (marriage, adoption, divorce, children out of wedlock, etc.) Family connections are complex and at times messy. I seek to reveal the intrinsic patterns which reflect their beauty. The process lends itself to the notion that there could be healing of collective negative transferred behaviors and possibly even trauma.

Susan Smereka was born and raised outside of Toronto, Ontario, Canada and now has lived in Vermont, USA for over thirty years. Smereka graduated from Concordia University, Montreal with a BFA in 1994. Whether working at the etching press with ink and collage, writing and bookmaking, or video installation, Susan is interested in the concepts of disorganization and order around experiences of inner experiences and those of family relationships. How these, seemingly opposing energies reconciled, or not, continues to spurn her artistic process for 40-plus years. Smereka co-founded 'new new art studio' in 2020 with her partner Kevin Donegan. 'new new art studio', Burlington, Vermont, is a space for teaching, exhibitions, and the creation of fine art.
