A vintage-toned monochrome photograph taken on a steep hillside in Cheshire. Chronologically, this was shot 18 days after “No Rhyme or Reason”, and 3 days after my father’s funeral. I was compelled to continue my comforting walks along the enchanting path just below my parents’ house. Autumn had truly begun and strong morning light broke through the treetops and lit up this area where two flights of wooden steps intersect the path. Whilst being firm underfoot – the steps are anchored into the earth only by wooden pegs and thus have a temporary, impermanent feel – echoed by the protruding tree roots which run almost in parallel. At this time I was coming to terms with the recent bereavement. The titled is a direct reference to the beautifully lit flights of steps and perhaps a subconscious reference to more spiritual matters.

United Kingdom
Originally from Cheshire (UK), I started out painting with watercolour and later studied technical drawing as part of my engineering qualifications. Photography offered the perfect blend of art and science and my fascination began; travelling widely with my engineering work I found urban artistic inspiration in New York, Paris, Tokyo and Toronto. Settling in London over 20 years ago, I now live among neighbourhoods and buildings which support my passion for abstract, architectural and street photography. Influenced by my background, one could say I shoot with the eyes of an impressionistic painter and the mind of an engineer. I take inspiration from everyday objects, surfaces and scenes which are often transformed into the extraordinary, surreal or abstract. I'm drawn to urban oddities, colourful collisions, deep perspective and playful geometry. To capture the most compelling stories I prefer to shoot spontaneously, unbound by genre or subject. My images are often featured on the BBC and VOGUE websites, and have been collected across 4 continents. All images ©2000-2023 Pete Edmunds. All rights reserved.
