Over the past months, I have been looking for a muse to paint. I didn’t just want to paint another pretty face; I was searching for someone with a special character and personality. Mui has all the characteristics and personality that I have been looking for. She is a well-known person in Hong Kong as a rugby referee and a yoga instructor. She is pretty special, however, as she is the world's first rugby umpire living with Harlequin ichthyosis, a rare congenital skin disorder. This means her skin grows 10 times faster than other people’s. Her battle to live a normal life began when she was just a baby. She was abandoned by her birth parents because of how complicated the condition would become. Her luck changed when she found her adopted parents. They fought hard for her, looking for doctors that understood her condition and schools that would accept her. They now hope to support other families living with similar conditions through their campaign The Girl Behind the Face, where they help people understand who Mui is aside from her condition. These beautiful, inspirational and strong characteristics attracted me to paint her portrait, leaving viewers questioning what beauty really is.
