Using painted papers and mixed fibres, this handwoven piece has natural yarns in its warp and strips of paper in its weft. My inspiration comes from the land- and seascapes of the Hebrides, a group of islands located off the west coast of Scotland that extend out into the Atlantic. The colours of these islands and the seas surrounding them change by the minute, at the whim of the weather; the sea varies from aquamarine to cobalt blue, the sands of the beaches are golden to almost white, and the coastlines are rocky and covered with seaweed and lichens. I visit this part of the world every year and it never fails to inspire me and touch my soul. The warp consists of linen, cotton (of which some is space dyed) and silk yarns; the space-dyed cotton yarn was also used as weft in a small section. Repurposed, pre-used packing paper was painted with acrylic paint in Payne’s grey, viridian and bronze, and then cut into strips to use as weft material. Each strip was fed by hand between the warp on the loom using a mixture of English tabby and random zig zig twill patterns. The opulence of the bronze is off-set by the deep Payne's grey and viridian towards the top of the work. Rich in colour and texture, there is an honesty in the woven construction that invites the viewer to come in close to investigate the details. The piece hangs on a wooden baton with a hand-braided linen cord.

Veronica is a textile artist specialising in weave. With a passion for reusing and recycling waste and a perceptive sense of colour and textural combination, Veronica uses materials such as newspaper, vintage maps and cassette tape to create wall-hangings and panels. These make tactile and beguiling, quietly powerful additions to any interior. With materiality as a starting point, Veronica gives value and meaning to the apparently worthless and waste materials. Depth and character are created in the weave using structural effects and floating threads. Reacting to the material and its provenance, Veronica exposes its essence through the subtle combination of texture, colour and pattern. "Weaving is a metaphor. Textiles are a metaphor. Their impermanence reflects the transient nature of remembered events, experiences and emotions."
