You may know the story in Greek mythology of Danae, imprisoned by her father to prevent the pregnancy that the "prophecy" told him would be the death of him. Zeus fancies her and decides to visit her, regardless, appearing as a golden rain shower and she becomes pregnant with his child, Perseus, who goes on to slay the monstrous Medusa. In my work, I am exploring ideas around consent, censorship, sexuality, body and gender shaming and ageism. I find it unsettling that the basics of sexism have been normalised, and accepted by the greater part of society and I seek examples of this in history and contemporary society. Sometimes I draw influence from the stories of the bible, greek mythology and my personal experience in modern culture and online forums where censorship runs ridiculously out of control. I invite you to question women’s bodily autonomy and the complexity of the female form in modern society through my mixed-media embellishment of photography.

Rachel Calvo is a professional portrait photographer and mixed media artist based in Paris. Born in 1975 in Australia, Rachel grew up on the southern beaches of Sydney. Her globe-trotting parents instilled a desire to travel and explore the world. This encouraged her to travel to London in 1999 and finally France, where she now resides with her family. Her mixed media studies are a blend of photography, gold leaf, gold inks and dried flowers; many of which she collects and preserves herself. She uses this medium to showcase issues for women that are often internalised, though which exist for each one of us. She hopes to encourage a wider discussion around the topics of ageism, body image, sexuality and self-love.
